For the treatment of recurrent episodes of genital herpes, valacyclovir dose is 500 mg taken twice a day for 3 days. Treatment should be initiated at the first appearance of the first sign or symptom of recurrence. The recommended dose to prevent recurrence is 1000 mg taken once a day. For people who have 9 recurrences or less per year, a daily dose of 500 mg per day can be used.
